Pastor
Lucy Skates Robertson, a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, friend, counselor, pastor, was born to the late Hubert and Lillie Skates in Lynchburg, Virginia. Lucy married Donald Robertson in 1986, and they have two daughters, Jazmine and Jerika.
Educated in the public schools of Charlotte County, Lucy continued her education at Virginia Tech where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications and her Master of Arts in Education. In 2003 Lucy accepted the call of God to proclaim His Word and was licensed in the same year at First Gravel Hill Baptist Church (FGHBC) in Smithfield, Virginia, where she was also ordained in 2010. To prepare for ministry Lucy enrolled in Virginia Union University’s Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, earning a Master of Divinity in May of 2012. After 30 years of service in education, Lucy retired in 2017 from Isle of Wight County Public Schools, where she was a school counselor at Smithfield High. Her next assignment was at Hampton University, from 2017 to 2021, as an Academic Coordinator with the Educational Talent Search Program, where she had the opportunity to continue working with young people. The Lord told Lucy, while she was in seminary, that she would pastor. In June of 2021, God kept His promise to Lucy when she was installed as pastor of Cypress Baptist Church. God is faithful. Realizing that the Lord’s guidance is required to lead, serve, and equip the people of God as they grow spiritually; and in reaching the unsaved for Christ, Lucy is committed to the Lord’s call and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Ministry Degree at Regent University. She stands on Isaiah 41:10—“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Church History
CYPRESS BAPTIST CHURCH was organized in the home of Easter Eley in the fall of 1866, under the leadership of Mrs. Irene George. The place of organization is known today as the Easter Field on the farm of M.W. Guy Betts Sycamore Cross, Isle of Wight County, VA. In the Spring of 1867, the church, moved to the old brick Cypress Baptist Church, which was originally owned by an Episcopalian congregation about one-half mile from what is known today as the town of Dendron, Virginia. Later in 1867, the church moved to a place known as Piney Grove, in the fork of Walkers Road between the farm and home of Dr. S. B. Barham, on the Surry Courthouse Road, via Moores Swamp Baptist Church.
Mrs. George founder of Cypress Baptist Church, secured three acres of land, more or less from Dr. Barham for a church location. Prior to the building of an edifice, services were held under a bush arbor during the warm months and in the home of Mrs. George during the cold months. The services consisted of prayer meetings and stories of Christian experience. From 1867 to the present, thirteen ministers have supplied our pulpit. They were Rev. Baylor Wyatt, Rev. T. M. Bowman, Rev. Ellis Watts, Rev. J. H. Alexander, Rev. J. H. Higgs, Rev. Bolden Bradby, Rev. Preston T. Hayes, Rev. Ronnie T. Northam, Sr., Rev. Charles W. Nellum, Jr, Rev. Edwin L. Goodwin, Jr., Rev. Henry Blunt, Rev. Alvin T. Armstead, Jr. and Rev. Dr. Millard F. Boone III.
It has been the guiding hands of God that have brought Cypress thus far. In the months ahead, our prayers will be that God will continue to bless us by guiding our church to better and greater service to mankind in his name.
